CHAPTER 14

~ KYLIE ~

Supper with Rusty and Rae-Anne went quietly – in part because the twins had been warned that they were to say absolutely nothing about the lady who had died.

I had explained to them that this was because she was part of Rusty’s family, and that seemed to make them much quieter than usual, and more eager to have dessert and head upstairs.

I had ventured a question about their wedding date, getting as far as “Well, have you two decided…” before Rae-Anne gave me a “Not now!” look.

Buddy had done a little better with Rusty, talking about work and sports and hunting, but they are good friends and have been talking about work and sports and hunting so long, that they could probably do it in their sleep.

Things got more comfortable after supper. Rusty explained that he’d gone over to the Sheffield Inn but didn’t get to see either his brother or his sister-in-law. Sabrina was surrounded with her lady friends in their bedroom, while the main rooms were filled with some visiting tourism committee. Roger was talking with Daniel O’Reilly in Ned Danvers’s office.

“So, he decided to come over and look at our new ride-on mowers,” Buddy told Rae-Anne with a grin.

“I hope you didn’t sell him one,” Rae-Anne said. “He’s got one already!”

Rae-Anne’s a pretty redhead who moved to River Valley to take a nursing position at our hospital. She awed the whole town by getting Rusty Randall to make a commitment and give her a diamond ring to prove it.

“I was just killing time until you got off work,” Rusty told her with a smile.

As he relaxed more, Rusty opened up.

“I feel bad for Sabrina,” he said, “But Roger wasn’t close to Sybil at all, and I hardly knew her.”

“We both need to go and see them tomorrow,” Rae-Anne said. “Sabrina must be just broken-hearted. She hated moving anyway – and now this.”

Mom came into the room just then and said, “Tomorrow will be a better day to visit anyway. I just heard from Martha Galloway that she’s invited Sabrina and Roger to stay with her. There’s just too much of a crowd at the inn.”

As the others began to discuss this, she spoke in a lower voice to me, and said Miss Martha wanted some help with brunch food.

“I’m going to need your help,” she said. “I’ve got my Wednesday morning meeting with Max Claxton.”

Max is the City Manager, and Mom doesn’t miss those meetings. She’s offered to pay me for my help with the catering deliveries more than once. I’ve said no every time.
